How to open an .mpp file on Mac or iPad

An .mpp file is a Microsoft Project schedule. Your Mac and iPad can’t open it on their own, but you don’t need Microsoft Project, Windows or an online converter.

On a Mac

  1. Install MPP Studio from the App Store (coming soon: get notified at launch).
  2. Double-click the .mpp file in Finder, or drag it onto MPP Studio in the Dock. If another app opens it, right-click the file, choose Open With › MPP Studio, or use Get Info › Open with › Change All.
  3. The schedule opens with the task outline beside the Gantt chart, the critical path in red.

On an iPad

  1. Install MPP Studio from the App Store.
  2. Save the .mpp to Files: from Mail, press and hold the attachment and choose Save to Files; from OneDrive, Dropbox or SharePoint, use their Files integration.
  3. Open MPP Studio and choose the file in the browser, or tap the file in the Files app.

Turn it into a PDF

Choose File › Print (⌘P), then Save as PDF. On Mac, tick Fit to one page for a one-sheet programme. That’s the quickest way to share a schedule with someone who has no project software at all.

Edit it and send it back

Change dates, durations and links, record progress, and save with ⌘S. MPP Studio writes the same .mpp format, so the file opens in Microsoft Project 2010 through Microsoft 365 on the sender’s Windows PC.

Why not an online converter?

Online “mpp viewers” upload your schedule to someone else’s server. Programmes often contain client names, costs and dates that shouldn’t leave the company. MPP Studio opens the file on your device and never uploads it. Read the Privacy Policy.
